In January 2020, the local authority approved Chelveston Renewable Energy Park’s application for a Peak Lopping Generation Plant
Peak Lopping is an important consideration for the security of the National Electricity Grid. When there is a surge in power demands nationally, the Grid requires specialist plants to respond almost instantly.
At Chelveston, Gas Reciprocating Engines are to be installed. Capable of generating up to 47MW at any given time, the plant will offer highly efficient, virtually instantaneous back-up to the Grid.
Specifically 4 Natural Gas, and 1 Biofuel Engine have been approved by the local authority. Both are established technologies with flexible generation.
While the plant will only be operational for a fraction of the year it could still produce up to 40,000 MWh per annum, depending on National Grid Requirements.
